"When we were tuning the transient response in the kick, the low end was stellar. Nothing was throwing off the phase, and it had depth. The transients were out front so the program material was still clear, while every hit had so much impact without sounding like it was too punchy. And it is almost unbelievable how light it is for an active box.”
Joey Diehl [Brett Young's FOH engineer & Production Manager]

"VIO L212 has a great frequency response for this kind of venue and a great boldness and punch. It’s an easy box to work with that flies really quickly, it sounds good right out of the box."
Ruben Santacruz [MacWest Group Appllication Engineer]

Description

THE EVENT
Sunny, 70 degree weather set the perfect scene in San Diego, California on October 28 for the KSON CountryFest, a sold-out Sunday concert with five bands on a stage set up entirely with dBTechnologies. The first show in the US to feature the VIO L212, Countryfest featured James Barker Band, Maddie and Tae, Midland, Uncle Kracker and Brett Young.
The Park at PetCo Park is an outdoor venue, a wide open space in downtown San Diego lined with trees, food trucks, bars and statues commemorating famous baseball players. Set against the home of the San Diego Padres, PetCo Park. The system onstage was made up of 12 VIO L212 boxes per side, VIO L210 boxes as side and front fills, LVX XM monitors and VIO S218 subs.

THE COMMENTS:
“No complaints here!” said Ruben Santa Cruz, System Technician for the show and Applications Engineer at MacWest Group. Santa Cruz traveled to San Diego for the show to make sure the first US deployment of VIO L212 on a live show went seamlessly. “Setup was easy, and nobody has had any issues with the system. The drums sound incredible, it’s very powerful and the coverage is great in this venue. And it’s a surprisingly light box.”

MixOne Sound/ Hudson Audio Works, who have used VIO L208 and VIO L210 for many shows this year, including Los Lobos, T Pain, Kutless, the Gardena Jazz Festival, Ziggy Marley, Disney Junior Live, Josh Turner, Jefferson Starship, Wallflowers,The Gin Blossoms and Lil Yachty, chose VIO L212 for the show because of its power and lightweight design. Santa Cruz adds, “For this show we had a very short time frame for setup, but that was no problem. VIO L212 has a great frequency response for this kind of venue and a great boldness and punch. It’s an easy box to work with that flies really quickly, it sounds good right out of the box. The amount of boxes we flew perfectly delivers the power that is necessary for this kind of music. If we had a smaller box we’d have to go 24 per side, or with other comparable boxes we’d have to go 16-20. But VIO L212 only needs 12 per side to get a great sound.”

Joey Diehl, the Front of House and Production Manager for headliner Brett Young, heard VIO for the first time at KSON CountryFest and was immediately impressed. “When I was walking to and from the stage when we were tuning the transient response in the kick, the low end was stellar. Nothing was throwing off the phase, and it had depth,” says Diehl. “The transients were out front so the program material was still clear, while every hit had so much impact without sounding like it was too punchy. The whole system sounded great right off the bat, and it is almost unbelievable how light it is for an active box.”

MixOne Sound/Hudson Audio Works System Tech Billy Catlin commented, “Having VIO at this show was also great because of Aurora Net. We could change the high frequency compensation on the boxes as needed as the density of the air changed and as the sun set and the temperature gets cooler. On a show like this with multiple bands playing over the course of several hours, I like to monitor the boxes since I have different front of house guys running through it all the time, and VIO works really well for that because I can see everything right in front of me with Aurora Net.”
