The FC Club Concerts at 1.FC Köln football club continued in November 2024, with dBTechnologies playing a key role
Fans of “Kölsch” music (a very popular local music style sung in Cologne dialect) were treated to three more concerts in November 2024 as part of the FC Club Concert series organised by 1. FC Köln, the city`s famous football club. As always, the events took place at “12. Mann” in the RheinEnergieStadion (Rhein Energie Stadium), the home of 1. FC Köln. At all three concerts, sound reinforcement equipment from dBTechnologies, installed and supervised by Fabian Rome and Technology for Events, ensured top-notch audio quality in the club’s living room.
From 1 to 3 November, Kölsch bands “Räuber”, “Mo-Torres”, and “Kasalla” performed in front of 750 enthusiastic fans. The “12. Mann” venue, with its large windows offering a stunning view of the pitch, also presents unique acoustic challenges for sound engineers.
As is tradition, the bands performed directly in front of the windowed backdrop, with the stadium behind them. The venue’s width surpasses its depth, requiring additional measures to achieve optimal sound coverage.
Fabian Rome from Technology for Events summarised the setup: “Due to the stage placement, the room’s shape, and the pillars within the space, we opted for a mix of VIO X310 speakers stacked on VIO S118 subwoofers directly next to the stage, along with additional VIO X206 units placed around the pillars. This setup allowed us seamless sound coverage across all areas without gaps.”
Jochen Gotzen, Technical Director at dBTechnologies Deutschland GmbH, who oversaw the system on behalf of dBTechnologies, also expressed his enthusiasm about working once again with Fabian Rome for 1. FC Köln:
“As the German subsidiary of dBTechnologies, headquartered in Cologne, it’s an honour for us to support the sound for the FC Club Concerts. These concerts demonstrate how complex challenges can be addressed with dBTechnologies products, delivering outstanding results.”
Fabian Rome placed three VIO X310 units on either side of the stage, with two stacked on a VIO S118 subwoofer. This setup was complemented by two VIO X205 units used as near fills. Further out, near the edges of the stage, Rome installed a VIO X205 point-source speaker on a tripod at almost a 90° angle, aimed at the room’s edges to the left and right of the stage. In front of the concrete pillars located several metres away on either side of the stage, two VIO X206 units were installed as delay speakers. Though not part of the initial plan, these delay speakers proved necessary to provide coverage for the rear seating areas obscured by the pillars. Notably, the transition between the VIO X310 and sharply angled VIO X205 speakers was imperceptible.
Rome managed the system, as usual, using dBTechnologies’ proprietary control software, AuroraNet.
This installation demonstrated once again that even challenging venues can be successfully equipped with perfect sound using the dBTechnologies product portfolio. On-site, there was consensus that, after several different concepts in past years, this setup finally delivered a fully convincing result.
